How to Tie a Knot and Sew on a Button
Life skills: Tie a knot. Sew on a Button
There are many ways of doing things. Not right not wrong, but many ways. I’ve always told my students that their job is to learn from everyone they can, and to come up with the way that works best for them.
Here is the way I have developed over the years – of sewing on a button. The knot tying method was taught to me by a student years ago. INVALUABLE!
Watch, then go and repair your clothing instead of taking it to Goodwill or, heaven forbid, throwing a garment away because it is missing a button(s).

Been sewing buttons on for decades. Apparently, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Going to try these tips next time I sew some buttons on. Thanks.
Makes my day. I felt the same way when a student showed me that knot tying method! 🙂
Thanks for the tutorial. Even though I’ve also sewn buttons for a long time, I learned a couple of things, like how to hold the button so you always work from the top. I like that it automatically makes the right size shank for the fabric, and much easier than trying to manage the toothpick I usually use for spacing! And that knot tying method looks very useful also!
Thanks, Londa. Another old dog here who appreciates the tricks.
Thank you Londa! I’ve bookmarked this page! I wish I’d seen this last week when I sewed 8 buttons on my new blouse 🙂
